Priva is introducing Priva TopCrop at the Horti Fair, a
revolutionary, plant-controlled concept for process control.
Including the plants directly in the control loop means that their
precise transpiration capacity is known at all times. This allows
the climate to be controlled directly and precisely, and to push
actively towards the desired crop activity.
For growers, Priva TopCrop is an additional tool that enables
the plant itself to influence the climate. It measures and responds
directly and also works more simply than current control systems.
There are fewer variables to be set by the grower, which reduces
the risk of errors. And the grower who makes the fewest mistakes
achieves the best quality and the highest production.
Peter Kamp, a Priva innovation specialist, explains the
principles on which the patented Priva TopCrop concept is based.
"The new concept comprises the existing Connext controls for the
greenhouse climate, along with an additional control that provides
irrigation, heating and ventilation whenever the plant demands it.
The systems' base and starting point is plant activity. This is
measured via the plants' water balance, in other words: from the
take-up, the transportation and the transpiration of water. The
purpose of the control is to ensure that the plant always has
enough water to transport nutrients and assimilates, to build new
fibres and to keep itself cool." As Kamp explains, the crop control
promotes a more balanced crop growth, without growth disorders or
abnormalities. "This can be achieved by inhibiting the
transpiration or by giving the plant additional stimulus.
Transpiration is, after all, the driving force behind the take-up
of water and nutrients".
In the next couple of months, various practical tests will be
accomplished to determine the added value for most common crop
varieties. The actual product introduction is planned for 2012.
