On the first day of the Horti Fair Meiny Prins unveiled the
Priva TopCrop concept, a revolutionary, plant-controlled concept
for process control. The Priva TopCrop concept was introduced on
Priva's stand (11.06.04) amid wide interest.
"After three years of intensive development we have succeeded in
actually including the plant in the control process. This will give
growers and crop consultants a new 'control' for influencing the
crop activity and the suppression of diseases. Using Priva
TopCrop the grower can exercise more targeted control to
improve his/her operating efficiency.
A large sheet was drawn back to reveal a special, 'talking
plant'. "This special plant makes its own decisions on how to have
the irrigation, heating and ventilation", Meiny Prins continued.
"Using various infographics, LED lights and a smoke generator the
plant makes clear how it is feeling and shows what needs to be done
to keep crop activity and disease suppression optimal".
The new concept comprises the existing Priva Connext controls
for the greenhouse climate, along with an additional control that
provides irrigation, heating and ventilation whenever the plant
demands it. The systems' base and starting point is plant activity.
This is measured via the plants' water balance, in other words:
from the take-up, the transportation and the transpiration of
water. The purpose of the control is to ensure that the plant
always has enough water to transport nutrients and assimilates, to
build new fibres and to keep itself cool. The crop control promotes
a more balanced crop growth, without growth disorders or
abnormalities. This can be achieved by inhibiting the transpiration
or by giving the plant additional stimulus. Transpiration is, after
all, the driving force behind the take-up of water and
nutrients.
In the next couple of months, various practical tests will be
accomplished to determine the added value for most common crop
varieties. The actual product introduction is planned for 2012.
